1970 Plymouth Superbird

12/12/2007

Plymouth Superbird. Based on the Plymouth Road Runner, it was the sister car to the Dodge Daytona and only built for one year,1970. It was designed for one reason, to win NASCAR races. It featured an extended fibreglass nose cone and a two foot high rear spoiler which made little or no difference to the aerodynamics of the car under 90 mph. The truth is that the spoiler had to be that tall to allow the trunk to open.
Superbirds were available with three engine options, the race engine being a mighty 426 Hemi rated at 425bhp.
Contrary to popular belief, the Superbird and other 'aero-body' cars in NASCAR were not banned outright. The rules implemented for the 1971 season limited the aero cars to an engine displacement of no greater than 305 cid (5.0 litres). So while they were still legal to race, the loss of horsepower which would come with the smaller engine, rendered them uncompetitive. A total of 1,920 Superbirds were built.

i just created an account in here for this particular blog.i noticed quite a few flaws but some of your info is correct. first off i own a lemon twist yellow 440 6pack superbird so everyone knows where im coming from.the noses were NEVER fiberglass, nor were the wings.yes all metal.second the trunk had nothing to do with the spoilers height,if that were the case they would have put it on the trunk, its height was to get the wings horizontal into the "clean" air unspoiled by the car or other cars.also the engine displacement ban was not to 305 cubic inches...it was to 360 cubic inches to cater to all three manufacturers closest engine size, chryslers 360,fords 351 and chevys 350
there are actually two different numbers that chrysler corporation came up with on production.1920 and 1935
no one knows for sure how theres 2 numbers but there is also on the subject of production there were at least 2 superbirds made in 1971 look up the facts
thanks for writng about these amazing carsthough
